Extinction
Under British rule the British East India company was unable to compete in the Indian Subcontinent with indigenous Muslin exporting its own fabric. The colonial administration preferred British textiles imported. Local weaving practise was tried by colonial powers to suppress. Muslin's production decreased significantly and weaving expertise was almost eradicated. The weavers were allegedly
rounded up and their thumb cut off, in some cases, even though this was reject as an alleged mislect of a 1772 article. Various colonial policies also suppressed the Bengali muslin industry.
